Monday we went to the flicks to see this movie. The trailers on the net looked good, worth seeing on the big screen good anyway.
I guess it was not the most fantastic film I ever watched but it was visually impressive and anything that showcases the versatility of Giovanni Ribisi has my vote.
The film begins in Mongolia, an oil rig is being shut down and the company sends out a cargo plane to ship everyone out. On the way home, the plane encounters a fierce storm - the plane crashes (spectacularly) and the survivors are stranded somewhere in the Gobi desert. The radio is gone, there is no mobile phone network and its highly unlikey that the company will send a search party - even if they do, the plane was thrown off course in the storm!
I particularly liked the part in the film when Captain Frank Towns (Dennis Quaid) is told that though there is no hope for them they still need a purpose (not an exact quote so forgive me)
Miranda Otto plays Kelly, the manager of the condemed rig. Giovanni Ribisi is a rather eccentric airplane designer.
All in all not a bad film. I didn't know it was a remake so I had no pretenses, I think that helps though :)
